Zone Zero Is Not a One-Map, One-Answer Question

California’s Board of Forestry explains that defensible-space obligations apply in State Responsibility Areas and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones in Local Responsibility Areas. Local governments and fire districts also adopt and publish their own Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps and may have additional wildfire or vegetation-management requirements.

That means the correct answer starts with the exact property—not just the city name.

Current statewide status: California’s 2026 Zone Zero emergency filing was withdrawn on September 8, 2026 and is not currently in effect statewide. Local requirements can exist separately, as Auburn’s local Ember Resistant Zone rule demonstrates.
